Meet Melissa Bernhardt, D.D.S., M.S.
Education & Academic Background
Dr. Bernhardt began her academic journey at the University of Northern Iowa, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Management with an emphasis in Business Administration.
She continued her education at the University of Iowa, earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree in 1996. She then completed her orthodontic residency and received her Master of Science in Orthodontics from the same institution, gaining advanced training in orthodontic care and treatment planning.
Professional Experience
Dr. Bernhardt began her orthodontic career in 1998, joining a multi-location practice in central Iowa. In 2007, she partnered with Dr. Smith to establish Bernhardt & Smith Orthodontics, with locations in the West Des Moines and Waukee areas.
She remains actively involved in education as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines where she helps mentor and train future dental professionals.
Leadership & Professional Affiliations
Dr. Bernhardt is a recognized leader in the orthodontic community and has held several important roles at both the state and national level.
Her leadership and affiliations include:
- Past President of the Iowa Society of Orthodontists
- Former Director representing Iowa to the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists (MSO)
- Current Secretary/Treasurer of the MSO
- MSO Representative to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Council on Government Advocacy (COGA) and current Chair
- Delegate in the AAO House of Delegates
- Member of the AAO Universal Guidelines for Orthodontic Assistant Task Force
Her continued involvement reflects her commitment to advancing the quality of orthodontic care and staying at the forefront of the profession.
Community Involvement
Dr. Bernhardt is passionate about giving back and supporting her community. She participates in the Iowa Mission of Mercy, where she serves as the Dental Triage Lead, helping provide care to those in need.
Life Outside the Office
Outside of orthodontics, Dr. Bernhardt enjoys spending time with her husband, Jeff, and their three children, Shae, Regan, and Dane. She stays active supporting her children’s activities, enjoys reading, and values time with friends and family.
